MERS-CoV death toll now at 109; Filipina Nurse in Saudi Arabia among latest MERS-CoV infected

A Filipina nurse working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is now identified among the most recent people infected with the Middle East Respiratory Sundrome-Corona Virus, widely known as MERS-CoV.

Latest reports have it that the victim is currently quarantined at the hospital in Riyadh, where she is working and is now placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for proper treatment.

In an interview with reporters, the husband of this OFW nurse (from Bacolod City, Negros Occidental) said his wife is currently being alleviated at the hospital's ICU, with some tube fitted into her lungs. She reportedly got the infection from another MERS-CoV infected patient whom she's been taking care of.

Despite all apprehensions, the husband remains hopeful that his wife will recover completely from such infection.

Pertinent reports have further said the hospital where this Filipina nurse works, is classified among the high-tech hospitals in Riyadh, thus it is fully equipped with contemporary equipment for treating patients. A good friend and her co-worker of presently takes care of this MERS-CoV infected nurse.

More Filipino nurses are likewise being quarantined in the same hospital, as they are feared to have the MERS-CoV infection similar to the recently diagnosed Filipina nurse.

According to the most recent data from health authorities, the number of casualties from MERS-CoV infection in Saudi Arabia is now at 109.

Latest fatalities include a 25-year old male from Jeddah and a 69-year old female from Mecca, according to Saudi health authorities.

Moreover, health experts in Saudi have also recorded another 35 new cases of MERS-CoV, making the total number of cases now at 396 -- world's highest tally, thus far.

Besides the Middle East, MERS-CoV infection has now purportedly penetrated some parts of the United States, as well as in Egypt. Health experts have figured out that the first MERS-CoV carriers have acquired the infection after visiting Saudi Arabia.

Possible MERS-CoV in Iloilo province?

Quarantined residents in the province of Iloilo due to potential MERS-CoV infection is now increasing, after an Ilongga OFW who just arrived from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia has shown some symptoms of the disease.

Local reports said aside from this returning OFW, two security guards of the hospital, and a nurse, are also being quarantined due to possible MERS-CoV symptoms.

The said returning OFW is now being confined at Western Visayas Medical Center, wherein doctors are getting samples for swab test, according to pertinent reports.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health, in its latest MERS-CoV advisory advises the public not to panic especially it isn't yet confirmed if this OFW from Iloilo really has infected with the disease.
