PH Azkals advances to 2014 AFC Challenge Cup finals, won semis vs Maldives, 3-2

The Philippine football team Azkals has just achieved a historic win in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup semi-final series against the host team Maldives, 3-2, allowing them to head straight to this year's AFC Challenge Cup finals.

Greetings from the Pinoy football fans were then flooding social media networks, since post game last night.

The national team have also earned positive comments and praises from lots of Pinoy football enthusiasts from around the world, expressing how glad they are for the Philippine footballers to reach this far.

Before the Azkals secured this win over Maldives, everyone was tensed especially when the Philippine team needed 30 minutes of extra time to finally trounce their opponent, with a final score of 3-2.

In the first five minutes of the game, the Azkals already have shown dominance in the field, making several goal attempts.

It was the Azkals striker Phil Younghusband, who hit the first goal in the 19th minute of the game. That goal marked the 36th international goal for Phil Younghusband and second in this tournament.

Aside from scoring, the Pinoy dribblers also have executed great defensive tactics, barring the Maldives team from advancing for offense.

The host team had tried to match the Azkals' tempo during the first half and that team effort has offered them a goal in the 36th minute, making the score even at 1-1.

But the Philippines immediately retorted with another goal in the 38th minute, courtesy of Jerry Lucena.

The first half ended with a score of 2-1, in favor of Azkals.

In the second half, the host team showed more aggressiveness, particularly in counter assaults. This resulted to a penalty kick awarded to them in the 54th minute of the game. That kick however was saved by the Azkals keeper Roland Mueller.

When the clock hit the 66th minute mark, Maldives successfully tied the score to 2-2.

Since then, both teams have played well defenses until the regulation time (90 minutes) has ended with an even score. Because of this, a 30-minute extension was given for both teams to play on and break the deadlock.

But probably due to exhaustion, the host team's field moves and assaults apparently became dawdling.

Seeing this chance, Chris Greatwich hit for a goal in the 14th minute. This goal has sealed victory for the Philipine team.

But with just two more minutes before the game finally concluded, the Azkals only has 10 players left in the pitch due to injury. But then again in the end, that player number deficit did not actually bring any adverse bearing for the Philippine team.

There were also certain scenes later in the play, in which both teams were somehow becoming enraged likely because of intense emotion and game pressure. This resulted to a commotion in pitch.

In the end, determination of the Pinoy footballers has prevailed, hushing the unreceptive home-court crowd.

So far this is the first time for the Philippine Azkals to enter the Final series of an international football tournament. This win seemed to be the Philippines rejoinder to Maldives when the latter beat the first team in their 2010 Challenge Cup qualifiers series with a final score of 3-2.

In 2012, the Philippine Azkals has only ended up in third place.

According to the Azkals players, playing with Maldives was indeed a great challenge for the team. Besides a homecourt advantage to Maldives, many players of the Azkals were also unable to play due to injuries.

Among those injured dribblers who weren't able to play for the Azkals team in that game include the first choice goalkeeper, Neil Etheridge, Juanni Guirado, Dennis Cagara, who was recalled by a club in Denmark, and also Stephan Schrock, who was ousted in the later part of the second half due to hamstring injury.

The Philippine Azkals will then be facing Palestine in the 2014 Challenge Cup finals series, to be held this Friday, at 11:30PM (Philippine time).

Overall winner or champion of the AFC Challenge Cup 2014 will be playing in the 2015 Asian Cup, which will be held in Australia.

Latest on Apple iPhone 6: Features, Specs, Release Date

Here are the latest updates we got from pertinent sources on the newest iPhone 6 before official announcement...

Possible design of Apple's newest iPhone 6 (smaller and larger variants).
The much-anticipated next big thing from Apple's iPhone flagship, dubbed the iPhone 6 will soon be officially revealed. While the Cupertino giant remains silent on the matter, more reports on the iPhone 6 release date feature and specs keep on surfacing and even have led to more speculations on the new upcoming iPhone device.

Here's what new reports have on it:

Apple's new iPhone 6 is expected to hit the shelves in the second half of 2014. It is likely to be officially unveiled in August or September. Reuters have cited that Taiwan's Economic Daily News disclosed that the 4.7-inch model will be rolled out in August while the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 variant will arrive in September.

As for the features and specs, the new iPhone 6 will most likely come with a bigger display time time based on prior reports.

According to the South Korean brokerage KDB Daewoo Securities, the smaller variant(4.7-inch) is expected to have a 2272x1280 resolution while the bigger variant to have a 2272x1280 or 510ppi resolution.

The new iPhon device will purportedly be powered by a 20 nanometer A8 chip (64-bit), which is believed to be much superior to the A7 chips seen in the iPhone 5S. Aside from a quad-core 64 bit processor, it will also include a quad-core graphics, yet with only 1GB of RAM as manifested in the A7, according to reports.

As for the operating system, the new iPhone 6 is expected to run on the latest iOS 8 platform, which is said to sport iWatch connectivity and many other health-related features. Other reports, however said the new device would run on iOS 7.2.

Moreover, Apple's iPhone 6 is expected to come with an 8MP camera, similar to that of the iPhone 5S, but with numbers of upgrades including augmented pixels and flash. The phone camera is also thought to have a f/2.2 aperture and Optical Image Stabilization features.

Other rumored features to manifest in the new iPhone 6 device include a full scratch-free sapphire crystal glass screen. The phone will also feature low temperature poly-silicon in-cell touch panels, TouchID fingerprint security, NFC and metal casing, according to pertinent reports. There are also claims that the new device would come with certain sensors able to detect pressure, humidity and temperature.

No reports or speculations on how much the new iPhone device would cost when it's out, so far.

If all these claims are true, then we actually have a lot of things to expect from Apple's newest iPhone flagship smartphone -- iPhone 6. It's definitely something to watch out this August and September.

Cherry Mobile Flare S Unboxed, Initial Review

I recently purchased the Cherry Mobile Flare S, a quad-core and budget-friendly Android phone that comes with a 4-inch screen, for P4,499 straight from Cherry Mobile store in Dumaguete City.

The phone has glossy black color in front and flat black (rubbery) in the back. It is slim, light and elegant to look at in its own way. It also has its own launcher that makes it so appealing when you turn the screen on for the first time.

Packed in a small box, the main unit comes with a proprietary headset, a power adapter and a USB cable. I was told by Cherry Mobile salesman that in 2013, the phone comes packed with a free jelly case (I paid for the pink jelly case shown in the picture above). The reason why I have to purchase one is because the freebies, according to the store attendant, haven't arrived yet, though I can still claim it by presenting the official receipt. The question is when will the stocks arrive.

The phone is pretty fast and after a few days of testing, I only encountered a couple of instances of lags. They happened because I already have a lot of applications running in the background with all its communication features turned on like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile data, etc. I already expected it knowing it only has 1GB of RAM and it's running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with its own user interface.

For a phone in its price range, it's actually pretty good; 4-inch display, quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz, and 1GB RAM. But it could have been better if Cherry Mobile added another 4GB in its internal memory. The Flare S only has 4GB ROM and almost 200MB was already used by the system.

Another thing I wished CM could have improved is the battery. The phone only has 1400mAh, which couldn't last longer for a quad-core phone, although I understand that the company has to make a compromise so as to produce a slimmer and lighter device.

The camera is mediocre, too. While the phone comes with an 8-megapixel sensor, the output image is far from being impressive due to too much noise even in environment where this is moderate lighting. If you take selfies using the Flare S, you must be in a place where there is enough light to capture a better picture of your face. The front camera is VGA, it's enough for video conferencing.

Overall, the phone is still impressive especially to people who are just starting to use Android smartphones. It seldom lags, it has its own launcher, runs on Jelly Bean (it's not the latest Android version), powered by MediaTek's quad-core processor, and has sufficient RAM. Is it worth your P4,499? For me, yes, it's worth it!

Sony, in its most recent announcement said the Alpha a7s could transform how photographers, filmmakers and even some pros do their job.

Marquez won against Alvarado via unanimous decision

After achieving his latest triumph against Alvarado, will Juan Miguel Marquez still be keen on fighting Manny Pacquiao again?

Juan Miguel "El Dinamita" Marquez has won against Mike Alvarado via unanimous decision during their ring bout held Saturday night (Sunday-Manila time) at The Forum, Inglewood, California.

Ring judges have scored the fight 117-109, 117-109 and 119-108, all in favor of Marquez.

Marquez, in his post-fight interview with the press, said Alvarado's strength is one reason why he was prudent all throughout their fight. And yet by using his full agility and combined skills, he was able to beat Alvarado in the end.

"I always said Alvarado was strong. I expected this fight," said Marquez.

Alvarado on the other hand, has openly accepted his defeat and said, "He (Marquez) fought a good fight. It was a great experience. All hats off to him."

The two boxers both have been knocked down in the previous rounds as they exchanged strong punches.

Alvarado was down in the 8th round following a combo fist from Marquez but immediately stood back up.

In the 9th round, Alvarado threw a powerful punch in retort to Marquez, resulting the Mexican boxer to fall down in some instance.

But despite all prior efforts he exerted, Alvarado has failed to trounce Marquez in the end.

Meanwhile, when asked about the possibility of having yet another rematch with Manny Pacquiao, Marquez replied he isn't yet thinking of it.

“We’ll relax. I don’t know at the moment,” answered Marquez through a translator when asked by HBO’s Max Kellerman about Pacquiao.

“Any decision I make will be the best for me, my family, and the fans,” Marquez added.

After the 40-year-old Mexican boxer posted a convincing unanimous victory against Alvarado, a common thought of Pacquiao-Marquez part 5 lives again.

This is by far the first come-back of Marquez at The Forum after 13 years of laying low.

Remains of World's Largest Dinosaur found in Argentina

The recently discovered fossils in Argentina are yet another proof that dinosaurs really inhabited Earth millions of years ago.

Classified as members of dinosaur group called Titanosauria or Titanosauroidea, Titanosaurs are often tagged among a diverse group of sauropod dinosaurs that comprised of Isisaurus and Saltasaurus species. Beleived to have weighed up to 90 tonnes, these dinosaurs have been deemed the heaviest creatures to ever lived on earth along with Argentinosaurus and Puertasaurus. Titanosaurs make up the larger clade Titanosauriformes, together with the brachiosaurids and relative groups.

A farm worker from Argentina has recently made a huge discovery after stumbling on some large bones of what is thought to be a dinosaur species called Titanosaur. The huge fossils are found in a certain place called Patagonia.

After learning of the farmer's newest found, fossil experts have immediately conducted excavations to find the rest of the remains of such a largest land creature to dwell on Earth.

Pertinent information on the latest discovery have said the newly found bones and remains are thought to be of a herbivore dinosaur that belonged to the group called Titanosaur. Such kind of dinosaurs had possibly lived between 95 and 100 million years ago.

Based on the first examination on the newly discovered bones, that creature could weigh up to 77 tons -- same weight when fourteen African elephants are combined. Experts have further estimated the creature was approximately over 40 meters long and 20 meters tall.

These details alone are good enough grounds to deem this thing, the largest-ever known creature to have existed on planet Earth.

Neap Tide to hit Pangasinan next week

Pangasinan, Philippines - Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Director Westly Rosario recently confirmed prior reports of the approaching neap tide phenomenon to hit the province of Pangasinan next week based on the agency's most recent monitoring.

According to Rosario, during this instance water in the sea flows so slow that oxygen production will more likely become too low. Because of this, the official warns on and emphasized the possibility of fish-kill to occur because of seawater oxygen insufficiency.

He therefore suggested every fishpond owners, particularly those in the coastal towns of Anda and Bolinao to consider harvesting their bangus (milkfish) early to prevent potential losses from fish-kill threat, as there will likely be low dissolved oxygen based on the agency's monitoring.

“It’s very consistent that there is low dissolved oxygen at the bottom. There is a possibility of fish kill in these areas. So it’s better if they harvest early,” Rosario said.

The towns of Anda and Bolinao are known to produce huge quantities of bangus that are mostly sold in Metro Manila.

What is neap tide and what is causing such phenomenon to occur?

Neap tide is a tide in which the difference between high and low tide is the least. Neap tides occur twice a month when the Sun and Moon are at right angles to the Earth.

When this is the case, their total gravitational pull on the Earth's water is weakened because it comes from two different directions.

Rosario further explained that during neap tides, there will be no mechanical production of oxygen because of the absence of water flow and the current is also calm.

Last April 25, BFAR's monitoring has revealed a problem on low dissolved oxygen at the bottom of the coastal waters in Bolinao and Anda towns with the bottom level being critical. The agency saw the measurement invariably ranges from the lowest at 2.51 parts per million (ppm) and the highest at 3.88 ppm.

The normal oxygen level for milkfishes to survive is 5ppm. Below 3ppm is already stressful to the fishes, Rosario added.

Aside from recommending early harvest to fishpond owners, Rosario also suggests reducing the density of their bangus stocks until tide goes back to normal. Artificial aeration can also help, according to the BFAR chief.

Drilon insists Senate not having predicaments amidst pork barrel controversy

MANILA, Philippines - Senate President Franklin Drilon in his most recent statement insists that the senate is definitely not in crisis and that the institution remains whole and strong amidst the involvement of several senate members on the controversial multi-billion peso pork barrel scam.

During his brief talk with the press, Senate President Drilon said there is no emerging crisis in the Senate and that senate work remains normal, thus far.

"Wala ring krisis, sa akin po, ipagpatuloy natin ang mga reporma na ginagawa natin at naumpisahan noong nakaraang taon," Drilon said.

The senate leader further said every member of the senate keeps working on certain reforms, including the ultimate elimination of the controversial pork barrel funds.

Drilon also negated the previous reports that claimed the government is allocating ₱8 billion as 2015 budget for PDAF.

“Unang una, dapat naming ipagpatuloy yung mga reporma na aming nasimulan na. Kung inyo pong maalala, noong nakaraang taon, pinangunahan ko po ang iba pang 15 na senador na bumuwag at nagbura sa PDAF sa budget. Wala po kaming PDAF sa budget, sa 2014 General Appropriations Act, at sa 2015 national budget ay hinding hindi po ako papayag na bumalik ang PDAF,” he explained.

Drilon also negated allegations of him as part of the controversial "Benhur's list."

He said these are obviously false accusations especially with the media claiming the Commission on Appointments (CA) as his implementing agency.

“Eh paano mangyayari iyan kung walang alokasyon sa Commission on Appointments. At hindi naman siguro nagpapa-confirm noon si Gng. Napoles o si Luy para sila lumapit, dahil hindi naman sila government officials. Ito po ay illogical, at walang basehan,” Drilon added.

Metal-eating Plant Rinorea Niccolifera discovered in the Philippines

A group of scientists in the Philippines has just made yet another noteworthy discovery as manifested by the recent unveiling of their research findings on a new species of metal-eating plant, scientifically known as the Rinorea niccolifera.

Rinorea Niccolifera is just one of the 450 hyper-accumulator plant species scrutinized by a team of plant experts in the Philippines.

Originally, the team has been examining a total of 300,000 vascular plants for this research project. And later on, it was found out that this plant species (rinorea niccolifera) can actually absorb huge amounts of metal without being poisoned.

Professor Edwino Fernando, lead researcher from the University of the Philippines and author of a new study about Rinorea Niccolifera said the leaves of this plant can captivate an all-out 18,000 parts per million of nickel. It’s a thousand times more safely absorbed than any other known metal-absorber plant.

Researchers in their press interview said:

“The new species was discovered on the western part of Luzon Island in the Philippines, an area known for soils rich in heavy metals."

Rinorea Niccolifera is classified among the plants that can clean up polluted soils and absorb commercially viable metals.

The discovery of Rinorea niccolifera does not only denote anew interesting finding but also entails significant benefits to the environment.

Considering the plant's nature that is capable of removing a huge amount of harmful metallic metals from polluted grounds, it represents a potential resolution to the country's ongoing problem on environmental pollution.

Apparently the team's discovery could offer a distinctive resolution to pollution problems brought forth by the mining industry.

Augustine Doronila of the University of Melbourne and co-author of the study said:

"Hyper-accumulator plants have great potentials for the development of green technologies, for example, 'phytoremediation' and 'phytomining'."

The term phytoremediation refers to how hyper-accumulator plants eradicate heavy metals from contaminated grounds/soils. Phytomining on the other hand refers to the process in which hyper-accumulator plants are utilized to grow and harvest commercially viable metals in plant shoots from metal rich soils/grounds.

Full details of the team’s latest discovery are available in the open access journal PhytoKeys.

iPhone Lock Screen Error surfaced after mobile iOS 7 update

Just like the other previous software updates, Apple's latest iOS7 mobile operating system update also comes with some unexpected flaws, including the recently found lock screen security bug on iPhones.

The new iPhone lockscreen error is first discovered by a security researcher named Sherif Hashim.

According to Mr. Hashim, the recent security flaw on iPhone's lock screen could let any unauthorized user to access and manage contacts stored in the device.

In an effort to warn iPhone owners, Hashim has further explicated the new iOS7 mobile OS flaw through a pertinent YouTube video:

"(The) iOS 7.1.1 passcode lock bypass with full access to the contacts list (is) very easy, and with additional single manipulation (I'm not showing that) you can access all the contacts details, edit/copy/share/message/email them," said the researcher.

Hashim has likewise explained that the new security flaw on the iPhones will likely be exploited when Siri is enabled. iPhone users will set a voice command to initiate a call and Siri will list down relevant contacts and numbers.

As momentary recommendation, Hashim urges all iPhone users to keep secure by disabling Siri on lock screen until Apple releases new patch to fix the current flaw.

The researcher emphasized the risk of exposing the entire contact list to potential exploits for those who failed to disable Siri on iPhone's lock screen.

"Your whole contact list is fully accessible for calling or messaging while the phone is /apparently/ locked," he said.

Meanwhile, another security researcher named Graham Cluley also commented on the new iPhone lock screen error saying:

"Of course, being an iPhone lock screen bypass it does require an unauthorized party to have physical access to your iPhone. This isn’t a security hole that can be exploited remotely. But many people are in the habit of leaving their phones lying around, perhaps in the office, college or at home, without proper consideration that someone might attempt, while backs are turned, to meddle with it with either mischief or malice in mind."
